The shots were falling early. By the bunches.

Two, four, six ...

But Southside’s eight-point lead in the first quarter lead would vanish in the blink of an eye Tuesday night.

Rogers’ Derek Hobbs scored 12 of his 18 points in the second quarter to pace as the Mounties rallied for a 60-43 victory at Southside Gym.

Mykale Franks led the Mavericks (0-3) with 18 points.

A frustrated Charles Cooper saw his team scratch and battle. But seven fourth quarter turnovers, mostly of the unforced variety, proved to be the Mavericks’ undoing.

“We cut it to seven (48-41), and then five out of the next seven possessions we turned the ball over,” Cooper said. “We didn’t even give ourselves a chance to get an offensive possession. I thought our effort was 10 times better than it was last week at Ozark; I was really proud of the way the kids bounced back.

“But when you put yourself in a situation like that, you’ve got take advantage of it.”

Rogers appeared to have the Mavericks on the ropes, extending a 34-26 halftime lead to 45-30.

But two Elijah York 3-pointers helped pull the Mavericks to within seven.

Then, the turnovers.

“We had the ball, on the baseline, down seven, and set the play up,” Cooper said. “We just didn’t convert the pass.”

Franks scored six points in the first eight minutes as the Mavericks built a 14-6 lead with two minutes to play in the opening quarter.

“That was a lot better than what we’ve done the last two games,” Cooper said. “The last two games, we let people get out on us. We really talked about that the last three days of practice.”

The Mounties’ Jake Early drained a 3-pointer on the team’s final possession of the first quarter, and Rogers closed the half on a 28-12 burst to take the lead for good.

Rogers 60, Southside 30

GIRLS — The Southside Mavericks dropped to 0-3 Tuesday night with a 60-30 loss to the Rogers Mounties.

Carsyn Grimes and Camiran Brockhoff combined for 21 points to pace the Lady Mounties to their second victory in as many games.

Rogers’ Ally Figenskau added eight points.

Erin Graham, Shielo Laranjo and Reagan Graham finished with seven points apiece. The Mavericks closed to within 12-10 on McKenzie Harris’ 3-pointer.

But after Reagan Graham’s trey cut Rogers’ lead to 14-13, the Lady Mounties went on a 14-1 run to finish the half.

The lead was eventually 33-14 before two Taylor Grist foul shots put the brakes on a 16-0 Rogers’ scoring run.
